About Ziggy and Miles Johnston: Internationally award-winning duo, Ziggy and Miles Johnston have been playing guitar together since they first started their study of the instrument at age 4. Ziggy and Miles represent two of the finest young guitarists this country has produced. Both studied at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and Monash University. From an early age Miles and Ziggy entered many Guitar Eisteddfods in both solo and duet categories, earning themselves many prizes. As a duet, they were awarded 3rd place in the 2017 Guitar Foundation of America International Ensemble Artist Competition and were awarded first prize the VCASS Chamber Ensemble Competition in 2013. Miles has won first place in the 2015 Melbourne Recital Centre Bach Competition and second place in the 2016 Adelaide International Guitar Festival Competition while Ziggy received second place in the 2015 and 2016 Melbourne Recital Centre Romantics Competition. Additional prizes between them include the VCASSOutstanding Soloist Award, John Hopkins Award (for best musician at VCASS) and Monash University Chamber Music Award. About Phillip Houghton: Phillip Houghton was a highly original Australian guitarist, composer and teacher. His compositions for solo guitar and ensembles used pictorial gestures in a powerfully intuitive way, exploiting the full spectrum of the guitar’s sound palette. Notably, a number of these works were championed by the guitarist John Williams, who was an important source of encouragement and support for Houghton’s work, and whose advocacy increased its reach beyond Australia. In the later decades, Houghton took his intimate knowledge of the instrument, powerful musicality and perceptive grasp of technique into teaching work with a large number of early-career guitar students. He was one of the great, defining figures of the Australian guitar scene, and his passing leaves it greatly diminished. Click here to continue reading.
